February 1, 2005 by Tara Brabazon

Greetings to members and lurkers.

What an exciting month we have been experiencing. The publishing of Liverpool of the South Seas has been accompanied by myriad media opportunities and chances to mention our Collective. We have all been working steadily on the contributions for our next book, Access all areas. Outstanding material continues to be uploaded to the site each week. We thank Jo Smith, our Web designer extraordinaire, for taking over so smoothly from the lovely Carrie Kilpin who is currently traveling the world. It is a credit to these two great women that the transition has been a flawless one. With such remarkable members, I have a feeling that 2005 will be a big year for us.

We have excitement coming in March. Needless to say, the PCC know how to party. And we have a great opportunity with the launch of Liverpool (has a nice ring to it) in March. A big thank you to Debbie Hindley for all her remarkable work on the launch. Details will be delivered to members shortly. It will be a night to remember.

This month, I put a call out to members and the hub kings and queens. I would like each hub to think of a small but significant project for 2005. The wheel does not have to be reinvented, but I would like all hubbers to think of an idea, item or agenda that they would like to deliver to the Collective for the year. The Critical Digital hub is busy with Access. The Body hub is running a seminar day shortly. The Creative Industrial Matrix is delivering the Creative Non Fiction work. The City Imaging exhibition has been a great success on the MEZZ.

So the time has come to refashion and revision our minds on 2005. Particularly, I would like one of the hubs to instigate some form of photography or image literacy project. I adore photographs and photography, and it would be fantastic to display the talent of members in a gallery. If any members or hub leaders can apply this medium to a project, then raise it with the collective. I am sure it will be welcomed.

Also, I would like to increase the use of sound on the site. Auditory Cultures is becoming one of the big phrases of the year. Currently, I am 'in negotiation' with our two DJ/producers in the Collective, Infinite Detail and Enrico. I hope to announce the results of our sonic experiments next month. But again — if anyone, and particularly the rhythm and movement hub — has suggestions for the use of sound on the site, then let the membership know.

I wish you well in your thoughts and ideas. Let's aim for five new projects this year, to make 2005 the time of sound and vision. Oh — and check out the News for February. Some of our members are already making every post a winner in 2005.

Be well — your Director is very proud of you all.
