Greetings to members and lurkers.

I have been writing lectures recently for my first year course. Through this process, I have been thinking deeply about the nature of creativity. I have always had problems with that word. It is has always seemed a bit 'arty' to me, something that those people do over there, rather that something within all of us.

I am getting more comfortable with the word as I get older. I've often defined 'intelligence' as the capacity to make connections between ideas, images or rhythms that no one else sees. Probably creativity could be defined in exactly the same way. The creativity is in the combination.

In my yoga class, my wonderful teacher, who is obviously moonlighting as a health and safety officer, warns his students to "work within your limitations." But as I bend my leg at an angle that is rarely possible outside of strip clubs and yoga classes, I realise that we never know our limitations until we go beyond them.

That is the lesson of creativity — knowing the limitations — knowing the rules — and going beyond them anyway. As PCC members are working through their hub projects in the next month, from Access All Areas through to Kathryn's 'Dark City,' think about your limitations and use them as the starting point for change, growth, extension and creativity.

Be well — see you in June.
